Here is my take on Supertramp's The Logical Song. Basically I reviewed the tabs
I found on this site and others and tried to play it but it didn't quite fit the
actual track when I played along with it. I ended up playing the entire song up one
and a half steps from what I found on the net and it sounded much better.
So for example the progression from the original tab for the verse was:
Am - F - E - G - F - F#dim
Moving them all up 1 1/2 steps you get:
Cm - G# - Gm - A# - G# - Adim
(the Gm sounds better than the G major chord in the verse)
I also used a capo on the first fret to help handle the second part of the chorus
where there is a decenting arpeggio.
There a few chords in the song that a bit tricky to finger. This is how I play them:
Admin
E --x--
B --4-- index finger
G --5-- middle finger
D --7-- pinky
A --6-- ring finger
E --5-- thumb
This is a very dark sounding chord and the voicing is strange but it seems to match
up very well with the chord that is played on the track. I also like the fingering
because it's a pretty smooth transition from the G# in the verse.
Eb6
E --x--
B --4--
G --5--
D --5--
A --6--
E --x--
The transition from the Eb (open C fingering) to this Eb6 is probably the most difficult part of the song.
In the second part of the chorus is where the capo on the first fret pays off with the the decending arpeggio.
This is how I play that part
C# Fm A#m(?) G# (repeat)
E -------------------------------------------------------------------
B -------------------------------------------------------------------
G -----------1------------1----------1-------------------------------
D ------3------------3-----------3-----------------------------------
A --4-----------3------------1------------------1----3----4----------
E ------------------------------------------4------------------------
So here's all of it together:
All of the chords are pretty much bar chords. If you listen to the track it's the best way to get the timing
down and the voicings.
1st Verse
Cm - G# - Gm - A# - G# - Adim (4 times)
Chorus:
(play twice)
Eb - Eb6 - G#
(arpeggio) C# - Fm - A#m - G#
2nd Verse
Cm - G# - Gm - A# - G# - Adim (4 times)
(sax solo - same chords as verse - 4 times I think)
Chorus:
(play twice)
Eb - Eb6 - G#
(arpeggio) C# - Fm - A#m - G#
Outro:
C7 - Fm7
C7 - Fm7 - Eb - G#
This musical interpretation has been removed due to a legal threat from Moses & Singer LLP,
representing the National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA) and
The Music Publisher's Association of the United States (MPA).
Unfortunately, these threats are fueled by greed and being masked by a "copyright infringement." They claim tab sites are
"hurting the songwriters," but it's a known fact that the publishing companies garner most of the
revenue. Instead, they would prefer you to purchase the
official SUPERTRAMP tablature
which is an option we've always given our users. And due to the highly error-prone nature of tabs on the internet, many choose to go this route.
These companies also do not realize that tablature sites help to promote their artists.
For more information on this onslaught, you can read the
NY Times Article.
We hope one of the larger tablature sites will have the money to fight this. Until then, we urge you all to keep tabbing songs and sharing them in any way you can.
