Metal Detector
They Might Be Giants
from "Factory Showroom" chconnor@hotmail.com
This song is a lot simpler than I make it out to be here... Some notes:
often the lyrics change subtly (i.e. waiting there beneath the sand vs.
hidden there underneath the land; don't need to squaking gull vs. don't
need no gull on the echo part, etc...) God bless tmbg.
The |X |X |X format is supposed to be measures, but I think I may switch
unannounced between whole and half-measures in this. You'll get it.
|X/Y means chord X with note Y in the bass.
I probably shouldn't have written everything as sharps, but I don't know
anything about music theory.
Some of the voicings here are hard, but they're worth it for that
thoughtful Giants effect.

Down at the shore there's a place where there's no one vacationing
|Gsus/C | G/B |G9/A
|G |G |G |D/A |A
There's just the sound of the call of the wild overcoming the fear of
|G#
the unknown
|C#m |F#/C# |C#m |F#/C#
And I've got something to help you understand
|E |A |E |G#/D#
Something waiting there, beneath the sand
|C#m |F#/C# |C#m |F#/C# |C#m |F#/C# |C#m |F#/C#
My metal detector is with me all of the time
|E! |A |C#m |B |E |A |C#m |B
I'm the inspector over the mine
|A
Look past the volleyball
Look past the ball
|E
Look past the squaking gull
Look past the gull
|G#m |A |F#/A# |G#/C
Ignore the mountain of discarded folderal
|C#m |F#/C# |C#m |F#/C#
Cause I've got something to make you understand
|E |A |E |G#/D#
something hidden there underneath the land
|C#m |F#/C# |C#m |F#/C# |C#m |F#/C# |C#m |F#/C#
My metal detector is with me all of the time
|E! |A |C#m |B |E |A |C#m |B
I'm the inspector over the mine
|E |A |C#m |B |E |A |C#m |B
Metal detector watch it shine
|G |C6 |G |D/A |G |Gsus/C |G/B |G9/A
Every sea shell has a story to tell if you're listening
|G |C6 |G |D/A |A
But underneath every shell there's a story as well if you've heard enough
|D
of the sea.
|G |C6 |G |D/A |G
Then everything on the top will just sudenly stop sounding interesting
|Gsus/C |G/B |G9/A
|G |Gsus/C |G/B |G9/A
So listen now to the sound of the things that are found under (over?) the
|G |G |G |G#
ground
[early years Giants samples over these chords:]
|C#m |F#/C# |C#m |F#/C# |C#m |F#/C# |C#m |F#/C#
|E |A |C#m |B |E |A |C#m |B
|A
Don't need no volleyball
Don't need no volleyball
|E
Don't need no squaking gull
Don't need no squaking gull
|G#m |A |F#/A# |G#/C
Don't need to look at any bathing beauty doll
Don't need to look at any doll
|C#m |F#/C# |C#m |F#/C#
For I've got something to help you understand
|E |A |C#m |B
Something waiting there beneath the sand
|C#m |F#/C# |C#m |F#/C# |C#m |F#/C# |C#m |F#/C#
My metal detector is with me all of the time
|E! |A |C#m |B |E |A |C#m |B
I'm the inspector over the mine
|A
Look past the volleyball
Look past the ball
|E
Look past the squaking gull
Look past the gull
|G#m |A |F#/A# |G#/C
Ignore the mountain of discarded folderal
|C#m |F#/C# |C#m |F#/C#
Cause I've got something to make you understand
|E |A |C#m |B
something hidden there underneath the land
|C#m |F#/C# |C#m |F#/C# |C#m |F#/C# |C#m |F#/C#
My metal detector is with me all of the time
|E! |A |C#m |B |E |A |C#m |B
I'm the inspector over the mine
|E! |A |C#m |B |E |A |C#m |B

Metal detector all the time (vocal note ends on f# for "time"...cool)
Metal detector all the time)
|C#m |C#m |C#m |C#m | etc...
This musical interpretation has been removed due to a legal threat from Moses & Singer LLP,
representing the National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA) and
The Music Publisher's Association of the United States (MPA).
Unfortunately, these threats are fueled by greed and being masked by a "copyright infringement." They claim tab sites are
"hurting the songwriters," but it's a known fact that the publishing companies garner most of the
revenue. Instead, they would prefer you to purchase the
official THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS tablature
which is an option we've always given our users. And due to the highly error-prone nature of tabs on the internet, many choose to go this route.
These companies also do not realize that tablature sites help to promote their artists.
For more information on this onslaught, you can read the
NY Times Article.
We hope one of the larger tablature sites will have the money to fight this. Until then, we urge you all to keep tabbing songs and sharing them in any way you can.
